We all have them..A favorite song or lyric which triggers a memory ,a place, a time, an era, an event, a person. If you have one, please feel free to post them here. If you have a wee story or some backround even better, but just a reminder of some great songs will be welcome.
One little point I feel must be made though. From previous experience elsewhere, I have seen this kind of thread quickly devolve into the exclusive stomping ground of the lacrimose teenybopper bemoning the loss of the love of the century whom they have been dating for the past week and a half and with whom they have just broken up and who's special song has just now been played on the radio/MTV or whatever and they just have to share the pain, yadda yadda yadda.......(shudder), so some very basic rules.

1: The Golden Rule: This is a family friendly site, so absolutely NO explicit lyrics allowed. I'm not going to single out particular artists or songs, you should all know what I'm talking about by now. If it has a 'Parental Advisory' sticker on it in the store?, it has no place being posted here.
2: No flooding please. I will not say you may not post after your own post but allow a decent time interval...12 hours???? perhaps; if nobody else has posted in the interval feel free to contribute again.
3:If the song is 'event linked' and you wish to contribute the memory that goes along with it, please feel free to do so, bearing in mind rule one and my little preamble.
4: Enjoy

Take as much time and space as you need to tell your story, should you wish.
This thread has no finite time limit and will not be deleted after a month.
This thread was requested by Apt and owes its inspiration to his original and excellent suggestion.
On that note, if anyone has any other suggestions for threads, please feel free to run them by me anytime.

Best Regards

Thanks EC, mate.

I'll get this thread rolling now Smiler

Laslo Bane ~ Superman

Out the door
Just in time
Head down the 405
Gotta meet the new boss by 8 am

The phone rings in the car
The wife is workin hard
She runnin late tonight again

Well I know what I’ve been told
You gotta work to feed the soul
But I can’t do this all on my own
No I know
I’m no superman
I’m no superman

And you've got your love on line
You think you're doin' fine
But you’re just plugged into the wall

And that deck of tarot cards
Won’t get u very far
There ain't no hand to break your fall

Well I know what I've been told
You gotta know just when to fold,
But I can’t do this all on my own
No I know
I’m no superman
I’m no superman

You’ve crossed the finish line
Won the race but lost your mind
Was it worth it after all?

I need you here with me
Cause love is all we need,
Just take a hold of the hand that breaks the fall

Well I know what I’ve been told
Gotta break free to break the mold
But I can’t do this all on my own

No I can’t do this all on my own
No I know
That I'm no
Superman
I’m no superman
I’m no superman

(Some day we'll be together)
I’m no superman
(Some day)
(Someday we'll be together)
(Someday)
I’m no superman

Woo hoo! Three cheers for Harsh and EC! Thumbs
I just love this song, but I prefer the acoustic version( off the "Live At Last" import CD over the one played on the radio.

When I Look To The Sky ~ Train

When it rains it pours and opens doors
And floods the floors we thought would always keep us safe and dry
And in the midst of sailing ships we sink our lips into the ones we love
That have to say goodbye

And as I float along this ocean
I can feel you like a notion that won't seem to let me go

Cause when I look to the sky something tells me you're here with me
And you make everything alright
And when I feel like I'm lost something tells me you're here with me
And I can always find my way when you are here

And every word I didn't say that caught up in some busy day
And every dance on the kitchen floor we didn't have before
And every sunset that we'll miss I'll wrap them all up in a kiss
And pick you up in all of this when I sail away

And as I float along this ocean
I can feel you like a notion that I hope will never leave

Whether I am up or down or in or out or just plane overhead
Instead it just feels like it is impossible to fly
But with you I can spread my wings
to see me over everything that life may send me
When I am hoping it won't pass me by

And when I feel like there is no one that will ever know me
there you are to show me

Cause when I look to the sky something tells me you're here with me
And you make everything alright
And when I feel like I'm lost something tells me you're here with me
And I can always find my way when you are here

Sample music from Train

This is one of my favorite songs. John Denver and Placido Domingo recorded it together and as strange as the combination seems, it is fantastic! Roger Whittaker has also done a good recording of it.

Perhaps Love

Perhaps love is like a resting place
A shelter from the storm
It exists to give you comfort
It is there to keep you warm
And in those times of trouble
When you are most alone
The memory of love will bring you home

Perhaps love is like a window
Perhaps an open door
It invites you to come closer ( you wrote close)
It wants to show you more
And even if you lose yourself
And don`t know what to do
The memory of love will see you through

Oh, love to some is like a cloud
To some as strong as steel
For some a way of living
For some a way to feel
And some say love is holding on
And some say letting go
And some say love is everything
And some say they don`t know

Perhaps love is like the ocean
Full of conflict, full of pain
Like a fire when it`s cold outside
Or thunder when it rains
If I should live forever
And all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I haven't researched every detail of the narrative accompanying the poem (lyrics) but they are consistent with generally held beliefs.

The great American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem that, since his death, has been set to music and has become one of America's favorite carols. That poem was "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day." Longfellow wrote the poem on a Christmas Eve during the Civil War. He was alone that evening and distracted because his son was off fighting in the war. Someone knocked on the door; it was a messenger with a letter from the Secretary of War notifying Longfellow that his son had been killed.

Later that night Longfellow heard the bells which rang at midnight. With his heart overflowing with grief, he sat down and wrote the lines:

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

Happy to know he could still write in spite of his grief, he continued:

I thought of how this day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rung so long the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

As the night passed, grief gave way to anger and bitterness, reflected in the third stanza:

Then in despair I bowed my head,
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Longfellow did not sleep that night but sat numb and overcome at his loss. At dawn the bells from the church steeples began to ring again. Moved by the new day and the ringing of the bells, Longfellow finished his poem with the last stanza. As Ralph Heller reflected, it is "one of the greatest affirmations of faith in Western literature":

Then pealed the bells now loud and deep:
"God is not dead nor doth He sleep.
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men."

Yay! Nice songs guys Big Grin

Guided by voices ~ Hold on hope

Every street is dark
And folding out mysteriously
Where lies the chance we take to be
Always working
Reaching out for a hand that we
can't see
Everybody's got a hold on hope
It's the last thing that's holding me

Invitation to the last dance
Then it's time to leave
But that's the price we pay
when we deceive
One another/animal mother
She opens up for free
Everybody's got a hold on hope
It's the last thing that's
holding me

Look at the talkbox in mute
frustration
At the station
There hides the cowboy
His campfire flickering
on the landscape

That nothing grows on
But time still goes on
And through each life of misery
Everybody's got a hold on hope
It's the last thing that's holding me

*****

I love this song. It means a lot to me, kinda screams out the good things about hope and what it can do for us.

*This song is also from the soundtrack of Scrubs*

Thank you, Harshy. Wink

Colorful- Verve Pipe

The show is over close the story book
There will be no encore
And all the random hands that I have shook
Well they’re reaching for the door
I watch their backs as they leave single file
But you stood stubborn, cheering all the while

I know I can be colorful
I know I can be gray
But I know this loser’s living fortunate
Cause I know you will love me either way

Most were being good for goodness sake
But you wouldn’t pantomime
You are more beautiful when you awake
Than most are in a lifetime
Through the haze that is my memory well
You stayed for drama though you paid for a comedy

I know I can be colorful
I know I can be gray
But I know this loser’s living fortunate
Cause I know you will love me either way

Look ahead as far as you can see
We’ll live in drama but we’ll die in a comedy
I know I can be colorful
I know I can be gray
But I know this loser’s living fortunate
Cause I know you will love me either way

"Let There Be Peace on Earth"
By Jill Jackson and Sy Miller

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me;
Let there be peace on earth,
The peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father
Brothers all are we,
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.*

Let peace begin with me,
Let this be the moment now;
With every step I take,
Let this be my solemn vow:

To take each moment and live each moment
In peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.

*Copyrighted alternate lyric:

With God our Creator
Children all are we,
Let us walk with each other
In perfect harmony

In Loving Memory
Alter Bridge

Thanks for all you've done
I've missed you for so long
I can't believe you're gone
You still live in me
I feel you in the wind
You guide me constantly

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
And ill come home and I miss your face so
Smiling down on me
I close my eyes to see

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I carry the things that remind me of you
In loving memory of
The one that was so true
Your were as kind as you could be
And even though you're gone
You still mean the world to me

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
But now I come home and it's not the same, no
It feels empty and alone
I can't believe you're gone

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I'm glad he set you free from sorrow
I'll still love you more tomorrow
And you will be here with me still

And what you did you did with feeling
And You always found the meaning
And you always will
And you always will
And you always will

Ooo's

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

One of many favorites, this one reflects on lost love and has always been able to make me think back to ..."

"Sometimes in Winter" ~ Steve Katz
(Performed by Blood, Sweat and Tears)

Sometimes in winter,
I gaze into the streets,
and walk through snow and city sleet,
behind your room.

Sometimes in winter,
forgotten memories,
remember you behind the trees -
with leaves that cry.

By the window, once i waited for you,
laughing slightly, you would run,
trees alone would chill us in the meadow,
making love in the evening sun.

Now your gone girl,
and the lamp posts call your name,
I can hear them,
in the spring of frozen rain.

Now your gone girl,
and the times slow down til dawn,
it's a cold room,
and the walls ask where you've gone

Sometimes in winter,
I love you when the good times
seem like memories
in the spring that never came.

Sometimes in winter,
I wish the empty streets,
would fill with laughter from your tears
- to ease my pain.

Van Morrison - Moondance

Well it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
You know the night's magic
Seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight
Seems to shine in your blush...
Can I just have one a' more moondance with you, my love?
Can I just make some more romance with a' you, my love?
Well I wanna make love to you tonight
I can't wait till the morning has come
And I know now the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you're never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that, you can't hide...
Can I just have one a' more moondance with you, my love?
Can I just make some more romance with a' you, my love?
Well it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
You know the night's magic
Seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight
Seems to shine in your blush...
One more moondance with you
In the moonlight
On a magic night
la, la, la, la, there's a moonlight
On a magic night
Can't I just have one more dance
With you my love?

****

This song is a classic. There's also another version by Michael Buble, but I like this one better Smiler

This is one of my favourite old Christmas carols.

Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming
Text: 15th cent. German; trans. by Theodore Baker
Music: Alte Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesang, 1599; harm. by Michael Praetorius, 1609
Tune: ES IST EIN ROS, Meter: 76.76.676

1. Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming
from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming,
as those of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright,
amid the cold of winter,
when half spent was the night.

2. Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
the Rose I have in mind;
with Mary we behold it,
the Virgin Mother kind.
To show God's love aright,
she bore to us a Savior,
when half spent was the night.

3. The shepherds heard the story
proclaimed by angels bright,
how Christ, the Lord of glory
was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped
and in the manger they found him,
as angel heralds said.

4. This Flower, whose fragrance tender
with sweetness fills the air,
dispels with glorious splendor
the darkness everywhere;
true man, yet very God,
from sin and death he saves us,
and lightens every load.

I Believe

(Words and music by Erwin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl, Al Stillman)

I believe, for every drop of rain that falls,
A flower grows...

I believe that somewhere in the darkest night,
A candle glows...

I believe for everyone who goes astray,
Someone will come, to show the way,
I believe, I believe...

I believe, above the storm the smallest prayer,
Will still be heard...

I believe, that someone in the great somewhere,
Hears every word...

Everytime I hear a newborn baby cry,
Or touch a leaf, or see the sky,
Then I know why, I believe!

* We used to sing this song in the church choir when I was a child. The boys sang "I believe" while the girls sang "Ave Maria". The two go so well together.

Uninvited ~ Alanis Morissette
From - City of Angels (Soundtrack)

Like anyone would be
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Must be strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squirm
Must be somewhat heartening
To watch shepherd meet shepherd
But you you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Like any uncharted territory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine before
But this is not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

I don't think you unworthy
I need a moment to deliberate

***

This song is kinda special and enigmatic at the same time. Kinda like the movie - City of Angels is one of my personal favorites. I don't just like it, I *love* it. And still I don't understand it.

"Caught In The Sun"
~Course of Nature

You're my distance, destination of choice
I'd give anything just to hear your voice
I could've passed you on the street
Without saying a word
Most times I miss the voice
That goes unheard

What if I missed you
You got caught in the sun
What if I did something
Never to be undone

People everywhere how could I be sure
If it's you that I have been looking for
What would it take for me to be comfortable
With you, with me you're the chosen one

What if I missed you
You got caught in the sun
What if I did something
Never to be undone

You are there for me this I hope and pray
You will wait for me, I won't be too late

What if I missed you
You got caught in the sun
What if I did something
Never to be undone

Will you wait for me
Or will I be too late this time
You are there for me this I hope and pray

For Today-Camel

I saw a pearl of wisdom
in the spirit of a man
as he saved
the day he lost.

Time will say I told you so
if we look back in regret.
Never give a day away.
It won't return the same again.

Nothing can last
there are no second chances.
Never give a day away.
Always live for today.

Darren Hayes - Insatiable

When moonlight crawls along the street
Chasing away the summer heat.
Footsteps outside, somewhere, below
The world revolves, I've let it go.
We build our church above the street
We practice love between these sheets.
The candy sweetness scent of you
It bathes my skin I'm stained by you.

And all I have to do is hold you,
There's a racing within my heart
And I am barely touching you...

CHORUS
Turn the lights down low
Take it off let me show you
My love for you: insatiable
Turn me on, never stop
Wanna taste every drop
My love for you: insatiable

The moonlight plays upon your skin
A kiss that lingers takes me in
I fall asleep inside of you
There are no words there's only truth
Breathe in, breathe out there is no sound
We move together up and down
We levitate our bodies soar
Our feet don't even touch the floor.

And no body knows you like I do
Cuz the world, they don't understand.
But I grow stronger in your hands, yeah...

CHORUS x2

We never sleep we're always holding hands
Kissing for hours talking, making plans
I feel like a better man just being in the same room.
We never sleep there's just so much to do
So much to say, can't close my eyes when I'm with you.
Insatiable, the way I'm loving you, oh, baby

CHORUS x2 to fade

This song is awesome! I kinda remember I passed out to it last night. But, its got this natural ambience thing happening. I love it Smiler

The Luckiest Lyrics
~Ben Folds

I don't get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
Brought me here

And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

What if I'd been born fifty years before you
In a house on a street where you lived?
Maybe I'd be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?

And in a white sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you

Next door there's an old man who lived to his nineties
And one day passed away in his sleep
And his wife; she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away

I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way to tell you that I know we belong
That I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

Missy Higgins ~ Scar

He left a card, a bar of soap and a scrubbing brush next to a note
That said "use these down to your bones"
And before I knew I had shiny skin and it felt easy being clean like him
I thought "this one knows better than I do"

A triangle trying to squeeze through a circle
He tried to blunt me so I'd fit

And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could've gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?

So the next one came with a bag of treats, she smelled like sugar and
spoke like the sea
And she told me don't trust them, trust me
Then she pulled at my stitches one by one, looked at my insides clicking
her tongue and said
"This will all have to come undone"

A triangle trying to squeeze through a circle
She tried to blunt me so I'd fit

And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could have gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?

I think I realized just in time, although my old self was hard to find
You bathe me in your finest wine but I'll never give you mine
'Cos I'm a little bit tired of fearing that I'll be the bad fruit nobody buys
Tell me, did you think we'd all dream the same?

And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could have gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?
Could you leave me with a scar?

I love Missy Higgins' voice. She is so pretty and she's got an accent in her songs as well Smiler

~Apt

I will come for you, if you call I’ll come right now,
I will help you see through, all your pain and trouble times,
Just you know I’ll be there, if you ever decide to call.

Straight To Your Head-Mutton Birds

There's a river flowing up into the sky
To the sky, to the sky
There are trees with human heads parading by
Sailing by, sailing by
And the hands of giants hold the gates
In the clouds, in the clouds
Up there where the dragons fly
Round and round, round and round
Straight to your head
You stop me from growing up, you show me
Straight to your head
You keep me from shutting down, believe me
I'll never leave you, it doesn't matter what you do
'Cause I can go straight to your head
To be close to you
Outside in the night the burglar creeps
Oh he creeps, yeah he creeps
In the flowers behind the house the princess sleeps
Oh she sleeps, yeah she sleeps
In the land between the lamp-posts
Everything is black
And here we come a-stepping
On the cracks, on the cracks
Straight to your head
You stop me from growing up, you show me
Straight to your head
You keep me from shutting down, believe me
I'll never leave you, it doesn't matter what you do
'Cause I can go straight to your head
To be close to you
I - used to only see
What I was looking for
And I - used to only hear
What I'd heard before
Now I'm looking all around
And now I'm walking
Walking downtown
Straight to your head
Straight to your head
I'll never leave you, it doesn't matter what you do
'Cause I can go straight to your head
I can go straight to your head
I can go straight to your head
To be close to you

~I intend to live forever -- so far, so good.~
