August 10, 1897: On this date a thirty-year old German chemist, Felix Hoffman, synthesized a batch of acetylsalicylic acid, a combination of salicylic acid and acetyl chloride. Salicylic acid occurs in the bark of certain willow trees and has been known as an analgesic since at least the first century A.D. In 1838 salicylic acid was isolated, but alone produces stomach pain and in large doses gastrointestinal bleeding. A French scientist combined it with acetyl chloride in 1853 to produce a less irritating analgesic, but his discovery was forgotten until Hoffman's work. Hoffman's employer, the Bayer Company, quickly began to market the drug as Aspirin.

August 11, 1911: When Duke Kahanamoku broke the world record in the 100-yard free-style swim by 4.6 seconds in Honolulu Harbor on August 11, 1911, the Hawaiian Amateur Athletic Union telegraphed the news to Union headquarters. Officials in New York were incredulous and reportedly replied, "What are you using for stop watches? Alarm clocks?!"
Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku went on to become a three-time Olympic gold medal winner in swimming, and the father of modern surfing. source Yay for LaJ! “If I should die,” said I to myself, “I have left no immortal work behind me — nothing to make my friends proud of my memory — that I have loved the principle of beauty in all things, and if I had had time I would have made myself remembered.” ~ John Keats |

The Watts riots begin. Overview: LAPD pulled over Marquette Frye, whom they suspected of driving drunk. While police questioned Frye and his brother, a group of people began to gather around the scene. A struggle ensued shortly after Frye's mother Rena arrived on the scene, resulting in the arrest of all three family members. Police used their batons to subdue Frye and his brother, angering the growing crowd. Shortly after police left, tensions boiled over and the rioting began. What followed was six days of rioting that claimed the lives of 34 people, injured 1,100 and caused an estimated $100 million dollars damage. ... 1508 - Ponce de Leon arrived in Puerto Rico. 1851 - Isaac Singer of New York City patented the double-treadle sewing machine in 1851. Although a sewing machine had already been patented, Singer's sewing machine was revolutionary, having a double treadle. He set up business in Boston with $40 in capital. 1867 - President Andrew Johnson sparked a move to impeach him as he defied Congress by suspending Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. 1908 - On 12 August, the first Model T Ford motor car rolled out of the factory in Detroit, replacing the Model A. Costing just $900, the Model T brought its maker, Henry Ford, one step closer to fulfilling his dream to manufacture a popular vehicle that everyone could afford. The Model T owed its low cost to new techniques of mass production - breaking down the complex job of building a car into a succession of simple operations. The car was assembled so quickly that it was only in black, because black enamel was the only paint that dried fast enough. Known affectionately as Tin Lizzy, the Model T was an immediate success. 16.5 million Model Ts were found on the road in the next few years. 1935 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the US Social Security Bill. 1937 - Comedian Red Skelton got his first taste of network radio, as he appeared on the Rudy Vallee Show on NBC. 1942 - Screen actor Clark Gable, at the age of 41, enlisted in Los Angeles as a US Army private. 1959 - Born this day, A.Fenton. 1970 - Janis Joplin performed her final concert, at Harvard University. 1999 - The Kiss-produced movie, Detroit Rock City opened. |
