Beneath the melancholy moon
that glowers down from bloodshot sky,
as the careless dusk of sadness
bids the evening pass you by.

Under the silent cloak of hours
In the distance of my dreams,
sweet memories are clouded grey
at least, that's how it seems.

In reminiscent fading glow
my eyes are blinded by the night,
In arbours of forgetfulness
my heart is shaded from the light.

My empty glass reflects the day
through blood red droplets of regret,
the wine of life has had its say
the burning moon is softly set.

The crimson sky begins to wane
the cold grey morning beckons soon,
another night has just gone by
another melancholy moon...

Keith, you have penned another sad, but exquisite poem. Along with gossamer, melancholy has to be one of my favorite poetry words. The title reminds me of a short piece* I wrote with some similar words. "Under the silent cloak of hours"...great line! I loved the rich imagery, and the various ways you portrayed the red sky...bloodshot, crimson; and then the "blood red droplets of regret" and "the wine of life has had its say"...more reds coloring the poem. Nicely done, my friend.

* PS I just located the above mentioned poem. It was entitled

Alone

Melancholy moonlight misting over me;
Soulful starshine shrouding my shoulders.

Beautiful, yet nothing can comfort me now
But your enfolding embrace.

Dismal days drift by slowly;
Long lonely nights lying awake.

Alone again in a world full of people...

Ocean storm, bayberry moon.
I have got to leave to find my way...." ~~REM

Keith...another great one by the master.

Edgar would roll over in his grave! I thought this one definitely had a Poe-ish feel to it...heavy in the sombreness department...and excellent word choices create a most distressing sad feel to the poem.

Loved the title too.

I just had to comment on this piece, Keith....especially because of the mention of what i love most about the night..."the melancholy moon".

Your imagery painted the night sky so beautifully for me. I particularly loved the rich reds.."bloodshot", "blood red droplets", "crimson", "burning"....

It was beautiful.

I venture to join the chorus.
You are a superb picture-maker with your words; the moon-feeling shines through darkly but clearly.

Keith...
such a sad feeling so beautifully conveyed with exceptional imagery.
I like the way you start and end with the 'melancholy moon'
well done.
